1906 - Muslim League founded.

1940 - Muslim League endorses idea of separate nation for India's Muslims.

1947 - Muslim state of East and West Pakistan created out of partition of India at the end of British rule. Hundreds of thousands die in widespread communal violence and millions are made homeless.

1948 - Muhammed Ali Jinnah, the first governor general of Pakistan, dies.

1948 - First war with India over disputed territory of Kashmir.

1951 - Jinnah's successor Liaquat Ali Khan is assassinated..

1956 - Constitution proclaims Pakistan an Islamic republic.
Nearly all Pakistanis are Muslim, and Islam is the state religion. Christians are the largest minority, followed by Hindus and Parsees, descendants of Persian Zoroastrians.
Pakistan's industrial base is able to supply many of the country's needs in consumer goods, although production has slowed in recent years.
President is head of state and has important powers but generally acts on the advise of the Prime Minister and is elected for a period of five years by a joint sitting of the Federal Legislature.
The president, in keeping with the constitutional provision that the state religion is Islam, must be a Muslim.
The establishment of Pakistan brought great responsibilities for Jinnah. The refugee problem and Kashmir were a real test for the Quaid.


Tension persists with India over Kashmir and a nuclear arms race began after 'Pokhran nuclear explosions', though CBMs are in full swing.
