The mutilated body of an Indian-origin man was found in a car park in the basement of a building in Johannesburg.

Ameet Naran, 29, a Gujarati bank employee, died after sustaining multiple stab wounds to his body here last week.

A few days earlier, he had ended a one-year relationship with his Muslim girlfriend apparently over religious differences.

Naran's girlfriend Sumaya Adam, 22, who was allegedly with him at the time of the murder was arrested and charged.

The charge was provisionally withdrawn later pending further investigation, according to the Post newspaper.

Naran's sister, Reshma Ramlugan, 33, said she was baffled at her brother's strange and sudden death.

"We opposed Ameet's relationship with Sumaya because of religious differences, he being Gujarati, and she Muslim.

They shared a strained relationship and broke up several times in the past year. We spoke to Ameet about moving on with his life but it seemed he could not decide his future," she added.

Sumaya's mother Fareeda Adam said this was a second blow for her daughter, whose previous boyfriend died two years ago in an accident. Ameet's death had torn her apart, she said.

She was the one to introduce the two of them because Sumaya needed companionship and Ameet seemed the ideal person, Adam said.
