Situation in the curfew-bound areas of Thakurganj and Chowk in the old city in Lucknow was normal but tense even as one person who was hit by a bullet during clashes between two groups on Sunday succumbed to injuries.

Babloo painter, who was shot at by unidentified men in the mob died in the hospital late in the night, while the condition of three others, who received similar injuries was stated to be stable, sources here said.

"We have arrested over 40 people and as a precautionary measure curfew is continuing in the affected areas. We are keeping an eye on the situation," SSP Jyoti Narayan told the agency.

The police, he said, was keeping a tab on rumour mongers, who created problems in such a situation.

Heavy police and RAF personnel were deployed in the entire area and only government employees and students were allowed to move out of their house and that too after showing their identity cards.

Security personnel were deployed on the rooftops of houses in the congested area to prevent people from resorting to brick-batting.

The police was also approaching religious leaders of both Shia and Sunni communities to make an appeal to the people to maintain peace and harmony.
