It’s time to vote for a new electoral system

March 31, 2007

Vir Sanghvi is right in saying that our electoral system is Neither Fair Nor Stable (Counterpoint, March 25). With the three Cs — cash, crime and caste — acting as the deciding factors in elections, MPs or MLAs are no longer the true representatives of their areas. It is time to debate the issue and look for an alternative. The proportional representation (PR) system could be taken up for a trial. What’s the harm in it?

GK Arora, Delhi

II

While sharing Vir Sanghvi’s concern over the decay in our political system (Counterpoint, March 25), it must be noted that any system which can eliminate criminal elements from democratic processes will be welcome. Yet, until literacy rate improves to promote better awareness, people will not understand the significance of the Proportional Representation system.

MKD Prasada Rao, on email

Vir Sanghvi gave a fine analysis of India’s faulty electoral system. The time is ripe to consider an alternative system to establish stability and fairness.

Varun Kansal, Chandigarh

Borrowed tune

Karan Thapar’s Can you ‘steal’ a song (Sunday Sentiments, March 25), gave a fine insight into the history of pilferage of music, with music directors modestly taking credit for the melodies and calling it their original uphill struggle. It is commonly known that Indians ape the western culture, which includes music, of course.
