Omar says Mufti deal is a sell out

National Conference president Omar Abdullah on Saturday said that Friday deal of PDP patron with the central government was a "pure sell out" and nothing else.

Omar who had been watching the politics of prestige being played by the two ruling alliance partners Congress and PDP over  troops reduction in the state, on Saturday demanded to know from Mufti Sayeed, "Where is the word demilitarisation in the whole draft of announcing committees to look into the relocation of the troops."

"No matter how he seeks to justify his position, the fact of the matter is that he has gone in for a sell out. At least I cannot think of any other expression to this," Omar said.

He said that the matters that should have been settled at the local level have been handed to Centre's bureaucracy. The local control is loosening over the essentially local matters and mufti is playing a big role in it.

National Conference and PDP are the big rivals in the politics in Kashmir Valley and each had been running down the other on the issue.

Omar said that there were "three guidelines" that Mufti Sayeed spelt out on the eve of his first meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. First, that there would be demilitarisation, secondly each day is precious and thirdly that the matter would not be handed over to committees.

"Which one of these guidelines he has stood by," he asked.

As it has turned out that everything has happened in reverse. There is no mention of demilitarisation, and there is no time frame for the withdrawal of troops and there is committee upon committee that would examine these matters.

"Where are those promises," he asked.

Haven't National Conference chosen a wrong timing to go back to the working groups politically? To this, Omar answered: "I don't look at the things through politics. I had received a letter from Prime Minister and we have taken this decision with all the interests of the party and the people in mind."
