| | More than 30 LTTE fighters were reportedly killed when about 300 Sri Lankan troops moved two kilometres into LTTE-held territory off the Vavuniya-Mannar road on Friday. Reporting the incident, the Sri Lankan Army said troops had ventured into the LTTE area to neutralise its mortars which had been firing incessantly for the past few days. The pro-LTTE Tamilnet website quoted the LTTE as saying that the army troops had whisked away 120 civilians belonging to Periyathampanai village, about 10 kms east of Madu in Mannar district. It alleged that these were going to be used as "human shields". Army's losses were not known. Earlier, the Army had fired artillery and a Deep Penetration Unit had set off a claymore mine within LTTE-held territory at Patappukandanthan, 18 km north west of Madu, the website said. |
