Violence erupts in Nandhigram

HT Bureau

After a brief lull, Nandigram witnessed fresh tension on Wednesday as Trinamool Congress supporters ransacked an office of the CPI-M party office at a marketplace after bombs were allegedly hurled at their procession.

In Kolkata, amid widespread speculations about the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) report on the Nandigram carnage, West Bengal Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Roy said Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya was aware of the contents of the intelligence report on Nandigram situation prior to the March 14 mayhem.

Reports from Nandigram said the CPI-M supporters allegedly hurled crude bombs on a procession taken out on Wednesday by the Trinamul Congress at Tekhali Bazaar near Gokulnagar in Nandigram.

Trinamool activists retaliated by ransacking the CPI-M office. A local businessman received injury in the bombing. Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said no arrests have been made in this connection.

Meanwhile, the home secretary said the contents of intelligence report on Nandigram (prior to the carnage) were discussed with the chief minister.

Incidentally, this was contradictory to what chief minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, said at the Assembly. Bhattacharjee had said that the administration had no knowledge about preparations of such resistance and retaliation, and he justified it by saying that information and intelligence network could not function for two-and-a-half months.

In fact based on such intelligence reports, the administration had mobilised police force from early morning on the day of the incident, Ray added.

Ray, however, contradicted this by saying that the contents of the intelligence reports were discussed with the chief minister and he was well informed.

The CBI had lodged an FIR against 10 people, who were arrested with arms, in Khejuri. Based on this, special IG (CID) have gone to Khejuri. The CID has booked them under Arms Act.

Meanwhile, Ray said that a few people from Nandigram entered Tekhali and picked up and kidnapped two people by name, torched and ransacked CPI(M) party offices. Later, the police have rescued the kidnapped persons

Meanwhile, a 30-member team of West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC) is visiting Nandigram on Wednesday. The team will meet the injured villagers admitted to Tamluk and Nandigram hospitals.

Meanwhile, officers-in-charge of three police stations, in Nandigram, Khejuri and Sutahata areas of West Bengal were removed on Wednesday.

“The three officers have gone for pre-promotion training, Kanojia said.

Opposition parties, however, claimed that the officers were “transferred” in the wake of the March 14 police firing in which at least 14 people were killed. “We want to know the real reason behind the transfer of the three OCs when a CBI probe is on,” Manas Bhuniya, leader of Congress Legislature Party in West Bengal Assembly said.

“And, if the OCs were transferred, then why will the SP, DIG and IG (Western Range) will go get away free?” Bhuniya questioned.
