Police brutality on residents of Nandigram is deplorable. On the one side, the Finance Minister is talking about improving the agriculture sector, the  farmers’ lot, on the other, one of its allies is suppressing farmers in order to appease the corporate sector.

The West Bengal government has forgotten that 65 per cent of India’s population is dependent on agriculture and will resist any attempt to deprive it of its livelihood. The Buddhadeb government is provoking the farmers. The communists are known to be perverse to democratic functioning, so sending huge possé of policemen to silence the farmers is not really surprising. Let the state government be prepared to see the end of its long misrule in West Bengal.

The report Pak wants to limit terror panel ambit (March 15), reveals that the Havana agreement is most likely to become history. India needs to cooperate with Pakistan on terrorism the same way it has with 20 other countries. But the anti-terrorism mechanism has little support in Pakistan.

Shameful conduct

It is a matter of regret that people’s elected members in the Lok Sabha behave indecently. There should be some code of conduct for parliamentarians. Let a standing committee be formed to watch the behaviour of elected members and take punitive action for misbehaviour.

If coalition partners can come to blows in Parliament over a trivial issue, one wonders what will be the state of affairs in times to come? Parliamentarians should be given lessons on stress management, at the very least.
