Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, recovering from injuries he says were inflicted by the police, has been released from custody and is due to appear in court later on Wednesday, his lawyer said.

Tsvangirai, who heads the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), Zimbabwe's main opposition party, and other opponents of President Robert Mugabe said they were beaten by police after being arrested on Sunday during an anti-government prayer rally.

"They have been released from police custody. Thirty-one, including Mr. Tsvangirai, are still in hospital while 19 have gone home," Alec Muchadehama, a Tsvangirai attorney, told the agency.
