Four people were killed and around 12 people wounded on Tuesday following heavy spring snowfall in the Valley.

Two people were killed in south Kashmir's Pulwama district - one in a house collapse and the other by a falling tree.

In Anantnag district, also in south Kashmir, a civilian died in a roof collapse while the fourth person was killed in the central Badgam district because of the untimely snowfall.

Hundreds of structures including houses, shops and cowsheds have also been damaged by the unprecedented heavy spring snowfall in Kashmir.

Reports from district headquarters in Pulwama, Baramulla, Badgam, Anantnag, Kupwara and Srinagar said rain-laden snow damaged hundreds of houses, shops and cowsheds.

Power supply could not be restored anywhere in the Valley though there was a let up in the snowfall on Tuesday afternoon.

Basharat Ahmad Dhar, divisional commissioner Kashmir, said that power supply had, however, been restored to all major hospitals in the city by Tuesday evening.

Inter-district public and private transport remained non-functional Tuesday though machines were used to remove snow from all the major roads in Srinagar and at district headquarters.

Most of the shops and business establishments remained closed in summer capital Srinagar on Tuesday as shopkeepers could not reach their places of business due to non-availability of public transport.

Attendance in government offices and banks was also marginal.

Keeping in view the unprecedented situation, the administration has closed all schools, colleges and universities in the city till March 19.

Disaster management centres and control rooms have been set up at all the district headquarters under the control of the district magistrates.

Doctors have been asked to report immediately at their places of posting following cancellation of all leaves because of the emergency caused by the snowfall.

The Srinagar-Jammu highway remained closed for the third day on Tuesday even as no flights could be operated from either New Delhi or Jammu to the city for the second day.
