The Supreme Court has observed that corruption is so rampant in India that the only way to get rid of the corrupt is to hang a few of them in public (Supreme solution: hang the corrupt, March 8). The fear of gallows has not acted as a deterrent even for those crimes where penal provisions exist for awarding the death penalty. It may be difficult to demolish the corruption chakravyuh as it exists across all levels of the establishment. The Supreme Court should first take steps to check corruption in the judicial system. Instead of taking action against those trapped in issuing warrants against the President, the Chief Justice of India and others, action was initiated against the TV channel that exposed corruption in judiciary. The court should hand over these cases to investigating agencies to clear its image. Subhash Agrawal Delhi Readers may e-mailletters to the editor at:letters@hindustantimes.com |
