Trained travellers

March 11, 2007

This has reference to the report How about trains to China, Bulgaria? (March 8). It will be nice if the plan materialises. It is said that travelling broadens the mind and there are still many travellers who prefer to travel by train and road.

Chinese checkers

Manoj Joshi in his article Coat of arms (March 7) states that India has expended a great deal of blood and treasure to bring J&K to heel. But all it had to do was confront Pakistan. Taiwan’s history, its current politics and military capabilities present a complex challenge to Beijing. China is behind Pakistan in all its activities in Kashmir and its nuclear programme. We must not forget that our northern frontier with Tibet and the Kashmir Valley together take two-thirds of India’s defence budget.

Corruption chakravyuh

The Supreme Court has observed that corruption is so rampant in India that the only way to get rid of the corrupt is to hang a few of them in public (Supreme solution: hang the corrupt, March 8). The fear of gallows has not acted as a deterrent even for those crimes where penal provisions exist for awarding the death penalty. It may be difficult to demolish the corruption chakravyuh as it exists across all levels of the establishment.

II

The Supreme Court should first take steps to check corruption in the judicial system. Instead of taking action against those trapped in issuing warrants against the President, the Chief Justice of India and others, action was initiated against the TV channel that exposed corruption in judiciary. The court should hand over these cases to investigating agencies to clear its image.
