Soon after a court convicted him for a 1989 death, cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday sent his resignation to Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Rajnath Singh.

"I am offering my resignation as it is my moral duty and have sent it to both the BJP president and LK Advani. I have also sent my resignation to the Lok Sabha speaker," the 43-year-old MP from Amritsar said in New Delhi.

"I am not bothered about the quantum of punishment and other technicalities if I have to move the Supreme Court. I am more concerned about morality and ethics," he said.

Sidhu was charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder for causing the death of Gurnam Singh during a street scuffle in 1989.

"It is up to the party leadership to decide on my resignation. I have done what I think is right," said Sidhu.
